CHAPTER 10:

As it turned out Jack’s truck was already gone when she stepped out of her room the next morning to find a cloudless blue sky and a heavy humidity hovering over the world.

Megan had promised herself she’d talk to him before he came over with the counters but she didn’t get the chance because as soon as she walked into the house she was assaulted by a foul odor that made her eyes well up and a thick gag issue from her mouth. She threw open what windows were intact and all the doors and tried to find the source of the smell to no avail.

She contented herself with walking room to room, spraying multiple cans of air freshener and setting up the box fans she found in a small storage room, pointing their faces at the windows to help get the smell out of the house.

By the time she finished that task it was nearly eleven and Jack’s truck was no longer in the drive across the street. She wanted to go over and ask where he was but some of the historical society members were on the lawn and she knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that the society would make things a lot harder for him if they knew that he was helping her in any way.

Frustrated and angry Megan began the task of swamping out the lower floor bathroom. She half-filled the old fashioned claw-footed tub with hot water, a quarter of a gallon of bleach, and then uttered a prayer before tackling the grimed-over pedestal sink and toilet.

She was on her knees, her shirt pulled up over her face to keep from choking to death on the bleach-laden air, and scrubbing the once lovely bathroom floor tiles with a hard bristled brush when she heard Jack call out, “Hey there? Anyone home?”

Megan tossed the brush aside and stood. Her knees were grimed with dirt and the gloves she’d put on, long and yellow, were stained and filthy. A peek in the mirror was discouraging. Her hair was falling out of the loose bun she’d put it in and was limp and soaked with sweat to boot. There was a streak of dirt on her cheek and her shirt was filthy and crumpled.

“Yeah that’s attractive,” she muttered as she headed for the door just in time to see Jack coming along the hallway.

Her heart nearly stopped.

He was beyond handsome. He was smoking, panty-melting hot in a set of khaki-hued shorts, a thin tee-shirt, and a pair of good and solid work boots.

He asked, “What’re you working on?”

Just that.

Not, hey you look awful. Have you lost your mind? Should I call an exorcist? Just, what’re you working on? Her tension melted away.

“I’m trying to get at least one bathroom cleaned up. I picked the one down here because, of all of them, it was the least gross. Not that that’s saying much. Gross is a relative term in this house it seems.

“I had one where someone had poured concrete mix into the toilet.
